Non- fiction Reading Response #1 (3rd Quater)

   Many parents have their ways to teach their kids. Whether it means strict rules or more fun every parents are different. But many Domenica Ruta’s family is a little different. In the article, “Escaping a Mothers Chaos, and Her Own,” by Charles McGrath, she goes through the past memories. Her mother Kathi Ruta was a lifelong drug user and sometimes a drug dealer. But Domenica elaborates more on this with her childhood.

   In the article, Domenica explains her childhood memories. Her mother was different from other mothers. For example the article states:

 “She was the kind of mother who allowed her daughter to eat ice cream for breakfast and urged her to stay home from school and watch movie.”

From reading this quote I feel as if Domenica just listened to her mom. You’re supposed to listen to you parents but top me her mother gave bad advice. The reason to eat ice cream was not good signal for the body. I mean too much sugar is not good and can lead to diabetes. And not going to school means not education. And without education where can you get in life.

    In the article, the author also states:

     “She encouraged Domenica’s artist bent, paid for parochial school and persuaded her to apply to Andover, the exclusive prep school. Yet, she suggested her daughter should get pregnant and drop out...”

From this quote I learned it all. I could tell that Domenica’s mom didn’t see the best in her. I mean a parent won’t just go up to their daughter and say get pregnant. Kathi seems to not see that Domenica wants and education. Instead of helping her achieve her goal, Kathi is going the opposite.

   After reading the article I saw a lot of perspectives. I saw Domenica’s perspective about her mom expressed in many ways. But I feel as if things can get better. If only both the mom and daughter had some times together things may have been different. Both lives may have changed and head in another direction. But things always end up one way or another.

Reading response #1 (3rd marking period)

Title: The Tree Is Older Than You Are

   After reading fiction and non fiction books for a while, I decided to read something else. So I looked through many book ad found this poetry book. The Tree Is Older Than You Are by Naomi Shihab Nye is a book full of poems and stories from Mexico. One poem that stood out to me is: Mother with a Baby. This poem explains the need of a baby. A baby needs his/her mother to live with and this poem the reasons why.

   As I was reading this poem, I could see that the point of view may be the mom’s point of view. The mom’s point of view explains what the needs of a mom with a baby are. For example, the poem states “Mothers with a baby need someone to sing to sleep...” Well from this line I can feel that the mother is directly speaking to other mothers. She is saying that mothers who have a son/daughter they need you by there side. The mothers help the child become grown ups. And the mothers with a baby need you to help them out whenever they are in trouble.

    I think that the baby’s point of view was missing. I know that babies can’t talk till they are about 3 or 4 but some way the perspectives are missing. The mothers can have diary or journal top keep track of the child’s feeling and emotions. Each and every day the mood of the baby may explain it all.

     Overall, reading these poems was very interesting. At first when I read the poems, I didn’t understand much. The poems were written in a language that I didn’t understand. But after reading the poems over and over I got the meaning of the poems. But the poem Mothers with a Baby was the best.
