Reading response #3 on social issues (2nd quarter)

Title: The Lying Game                                                 Author: Sara Shepard

Critical Thinking question: What really hard things are happening in this text? Are these things happening in the world now? Where?

I have currently started reading the book The Lying Game by Sara Shepard. The main character so far is Emma Paxton. Emma is going through problems with her family. She is at a new foster home and is treated as well as her brother, Travis. She has lost her dad and at age 5 her mom left her. Her new foster family maybe okay for now but Emma does most stuff on her own.
Emma has gone through a very hard situation with her parents leaving her. At age 5, Emma’s mom, Becky, went on a trip for 13 years leaving Emma with Sasha’s parents. Sasha’s parents gave her into an orphanage center. From then she has been to many foster homes. She has been moving and moving to this new foster family. The way that her new family treats her makes Emma feel none wanted. Emma has created her own family. They are known as mom star, dad star and boyfriend star. Whenever she feels down she uses the stars to cheer her up.
This is where I am now. I can tell that Emma doesn’t have a choice to move on. She has a family that treats her as if she is not a member of the family. She only has a job that can help her raise money to move into another apartment. I have heard that many have suffered like this. Many young kids are at foster homes and the parents may not appreciate the presence. Many children at young age have lost parents in very horrible tragedies such as accidents, fights (etc.). Kids are left brokenhearted and cannot forget about the situation. Children may have parents or a family but they won’t feel the same without the actual parents.

Many have memories after losing parents. Going to a foster home is leaving a part of life forever. Emma is currently going through the same situations. She misses her mother a lot and to her it’s like losing a friend and important an important part of life.
